How to remove wax spills from carpet

About this Recipe

Candle wax can be a hot mess, especially if it drips onto your carpets. Wax spilling anywhere can cause a huge mess, but on your carpets, it really gets into the fibres making it almost impossible to remove. It's not the end of your carpet though because there are some great cleaning tips that will help you get that candle wax out of your carpet easily. When it comes to carpet cleaning and removing candle wax from carpet, there are a few cleaning tips to remember, so you don't make matters worse.

Usually, if you're going to start scrubbing, the wax and oils from the candle wax can spread, making it so much harder to clean. So read through all of the steps in this cleaning tip before you tackle that stain. For this carpet cleaning tip, you're actually going to need a heavy-duty carpet cleaning solution, so if you don't already have some, you could purchase some at the store, look for carpet cleaning solutions with natural ingredients or even try making your own carpet cleaner from natural cleaners in your home.

You'll also need a clothing iron, a rag or a cloth that you don't mind getting wax on, a butter knife, scissors and the carpet cleaner of your choice. First of all, when removing candle wax from carpet, you'll want to allow it to dry completely before even attempting to clean it out of the carpet. If you try and clean it up when it's still wet, you can cause more harm by spreading it around as mentioned before. Use the butter knife to scrape the completely dried wax from the carpet fibres.

Try and scrape off as much as you possibly can and then use your vacuum to clean it up. Next, for the wax that remains, you'll take your rag or cloth and get it slightly damp. Then fold it in half and put it over the wax. Set your iron on the highest temperature and hold it on the towel for 10 seconds. Then remove the cloth and see if the wax has lifted. If it has, that's great; your job is almost done, if not, keep repeating until it's gone. If your towel gets dry, make sure to wet it with water again to keep it damp. The heat from the iron and the dampness of the cloth helps to draw the wax up to the cloth, transferring it from the carpet to the cloth.

Once you're finished removing candle wax from carpet, you can then scrub the carpet with the carpet cleaning solution. Spray the cleaner on the stain and then use a spoon to scrub and scrape any of the leftover wax. Dab the area with a clean towel to lift any remaining wax. Clean until all of the wax is gone and then allow the carpet to dry.

You might need to scrub it more than one time to fully get the wax out. Once the wax is fully out and the carpet has dried, you may notice some fuzz from scrubbing the carpet. This can be handled by using your scissors flat against the carpet and trimming off the fuzz. You can also use a brush to fluff up the carpet after removing the wax so that it looks nice and full again.

So while removing candle wax from carpet isn't the most fun thing to do, it's always good to know how to remove candle wax from carpet so that you don't ruin your carpet by cleaning it the wrong way. Try out these cleaning tips and see how they work for you. If you find that your candle wax is really stubborn, you may need to call in the pros to finish the job for you. But at least you can try yourself first.
